As a super food junkie I am constantly adding new magical fruits and veggies into my daily nutrition. From the top ten detox foods, to acai berries, to kombucha elixirs, I have found some new nutrient dense power houses to share with you.

Kombucha: Pronounced (com-boo-cha), this other worldly blob is a live culture made up of yeast and beneficial bacteria that is fermented in tea for 30 days. During this period, essential nutrients form like active enzymes, viable probiotics, amino acids, antioxidants and polyphenols. All of these combine to create an elixir that immediately works with the body to restore balance and vitality. Sipping kombucha before and after a meal aides in digestion and appetite control. Love it!

Super Green Powder: There are about a zillion and one green powdered drink mixes on the market. Go for one with a sample of everything. Organic and the least processed preferred of course! Seaweeds, chlorella, spirulina, spinach, wheat and other grasses, beet root, ginger, the list goes on. If you can get a scoop of this into a smoothie everyday you’ll feel it in your veins. Believe me!

Maca Root: Maca is a turnip-like root vegetable native to the Andean mountains in Peru. Grown at altitudes of 14,000 feet where no other crops can survive, maca is a hardy, resilient plant that’s incredibly rich in amino acids, phytonutrients, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Maca earns its superfood status not merely on the grounds of this nutritional density, but from macas true super-power: its renowned clinically proven ability to regulate, support and balance hormonal systems in both men and women. Brendan, author of The Thrive Diet swears by maca for refueling after his Iron Man workouts.

Coconut Oil: Mark from Mark’s Daily Apple covers all you’ll ever need to know about the wonderful world of coconut. I just bought some for the first time and have fallen in love. So tasty in a stir fry. The medium-chain triglycerides abundant in coconut oil make it an excellent source of quick energy. Like glucose, medium-chain triglycerides go directly to your liver to deliver their energy, without having to be processed first. There are several books strictly devoted to the health benefits of coconut. Don’t be fooled by it’s high saturated fat content. Use it as your main cooking oil beyond the beloved olive oil.
This is just a sampling of some of the amazing plant based super foods we now have available to us from around the world. Nutrient packed super foods help you learn portion control as well. When you eat more nutrients in every bite you need fewer bites. Makes sense doesn’t it? You’ll be satisfied quicker and for longer periods of time.
You can master portion control for life with my handy guide. Besides, if you are what you eat, why not be super?
Do you incorporate any of these nutrient dense powerhouses into your daily regime? I loved to hear your thoughts and recipes.
