There is nothing better than munching down a nice deli sandwich for lunch. You got the meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, sprouts, pickles, mayonnaise..WHOA…hold up, wait a minute. Mayonnaise is one of those empty calories spreads we could definitely do without.
A great alternative spread is hummus.
Have you ever wondered what that white blob really consists of? Mayonnaise is a slop mixture of oil (mainly soybean), eggs, and vinegar. A single serving (1 tbsp) equals 90 calories and 10 grams of fat! When was the last time you spread only 1 tbsp of mayo on your bread? Suddenly that tasty spread is adding a lot of unnecessary calories to our waistlines. The low fat varieties are no better with ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup and other scary additives.

Hummus on the other hand is made of garbanzo beans, olive oil, and garlic, depending on the variety. While hummus is still relatively high in fat, olive oil is a monosaturated fat that is actually good for you. Depending on the brand and ingredients you can find hummus that is as low as 2-4 grams of fat per serving. This heavenly mixture provides up to 7 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein.
What’s more, hummus is made with all sorts of spices and vegetables to give it various flavors. My favorite is the sun dried tomato or garlic variety.
Use hummus as an amazing dip for veggies or tortilla chips. Or try the traditional way of pairing hummus with a pita.

A whole-wheat pita with hummus is a great post workout or afternoon snack!
