It’s well known that the shoulders are where the majority of us hold excess stress and tension in the body. But, have you ever considered what’s happening at the other end of our spines? If you suffer from low back pain like I did for many years, you can find some much needed relief by massaging around the sacrum.
What is the sacrum you ask? It’s a large triangular shaped bone at the end of the spine, above the tailbone and below the 5 lumbar vertebrae. The sacrum forms a joint with the back of the pelvis and is a main nerve hub, as you can imagine since it’s at the base of the spinal column. Besides the nerve network surrounding the sacrum, several muscles attach to it, including the glutes, deep hip rotator muscles, and you guessed it the erector spinae muscle group (the long muscles that run along each side of the spine from the skull to the sacrum). With all those nerves and muscles in the same location it’s easy to see how tension can build quickly when your low back is compromised or stress levels shoot through the roof.
While strethening the abdominals to support the spine is key to reducing pain. This massage will help loosen up the muscles and relax those nerves. I came up with this one on my own and damn does it work wonders! So grab your significant other or a good friend and lets get to it…
How To Give A Sacrum Massage:
The Reciever: start lying belly down on a flat surface. A bed is the most ideal place, but sometimes a mattress is too soft, so I suppose a thick blanket on the floor would suffice. Place a pillow under the belly to support the low back, let the arms relax down by your sides and get ready for the best massage of your life.
The Giver: Climb on top of your partner and sit on the back of their thighs. This way you are not putting any pressure on their spine. The best technique I have found for this massage is what is known as kneading, where the thumb applies the majority of the pressure and works in slow moving circles. Start out with soft pressure and adjust to your partner’s liking. Begin at the bottom tip of the sacrum which is located right above the “crack” for lack of a better term. Slowly circle your way along the edges of the sacrum on either side. Massage across the top of the bone and along either side of the back of the pelvis. Pay attention to the feed back you are getting from you partner and adjust as needed. Now switch places so you can relax!
A good 10 minutes of this massage and you will feel like a whole new person. I guarantee it! Let me know how you like this massage and stay tuned for more simple massages to relax and rejuvinate sore, tired muscles.
