meditating womanVisualizations are an incredibly powerful tool used in meditation and healing. Whether you are new to meditation or a seasoned practitioner this is a great visualization technique to increase your sense of wholeness and well being.

To begin, make yourself comfortable by changing into loose clothing and then sit in your favorite meditation posture. Find a position that is comfortable to you. This could be sitting in a chair or cross-legged on the floor. A full lotus position is advanced and takes time to feel comfortable in the body. The important thing is to sit upright so the spine is extended vertically. Allow for the natural curve of the lower back. The head should be slightly inclined downwards and eyes closed. The tip of your tongue should touch the roof of your mouth behind the upper teeth. This is to connect the energy flow around your body. Relax your body and breathe. Release any areas of tension particularly in the neck, jaw and shoulders. Focus on quieting the mind of all thoughts and distractions.

Now we are ready to start the visualization suggested in The Chinese Way to Health: A Self-Help Guide to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

womanYou are now going to visualize your body as being healthy and whole. As you breathe in, imagine breathing in white light. This is healing and cooling and energizing. Each time you breathe in, you breathe in more and more healing light. Concentrate on areas of tension or discomfort in particular; if you have a specific disease or illness, you can pay special attention to it, sending healing light to that area. As you breathe out, visualize all tension, discomfort and problems leaving your body as dark smoke. Each breath cause more dark smoke to leave you.

Continue this practice for as long as you can, until your whole body has been filled by white light and is totally healed. All problems have been removed and your body is now shining with white, healing and energizing light. There are two recommendations that make this practice particularly powerful:

-Make sure that when you finish the practice, you have a sense that all problems have been removed. Do not leave a little bit over until the next time.

-Practice daily for maximum benefit.

I personally love doing this visualization after a hard day. It helps you let go of problems and feel happier and more balanced.
