Do you remember your first set of wheels? The feeling of freedom and endless possibility? I recently created a fun video about my one and only car story over at FirstCarStory.com.
As a California teen, born and raised in a small surf town, a drivers license and 1st car were essential. I couldn’t possibly handle one more ride with Mom or another day of sore legs from biking across town on my heavy yellow Schwinn cruiser.
I coveted a baby blue classic Falcon, but ended up with a massive SUV. I’m sure you’re wondering how this environmentalist ended up with a gas guzzling beast. My parents wanted me protected. Let’s just say they went over board with the tank I ended up driving for the next few years. As my friends and family can attest, I practically lived out of my car. At any given time I carried half my wardrobe, sleeping bags, textbooks, bikini and beach towel, coolers, even a duck or rabbit depending on my 4H project.

I was prepared for any adventure afoot. Just how I like it to this day.
By far the best feature of my beast was the 10 CD changer and sub woofer. I’ll never forget how cool I felt blasting Sublime, as me and my bikini clad crew cruised the Santa Cruz beaches on hot Summer days.

That Summer I fell in love with a boy and will never forget the beach bon fires, surf and camping adventures that ensued.
The Bronco was my one and only car. I transitioned out of “car culture” 6 years ago when I moved to San Francisco for college and never looked back. I’ve been taking trains, plains and buses and rent an occasional Zipcar when I have to leave the city or carry more than two backpacks.

The overhead of maintaing a car, gas and insurance and the expense of garages and parking in the city, makes owning a car an expensive, stressful nightmare. I’d rather spend all that moolah on international travel, high quality eats, and extensive training!
My adrenals thank me daily as I bliss out to some tunes on the train or practice my commute workout. I sleep easy knowing my foot print is as light as possible on Earth.
Luckily, for those who have to drive there are so many sexy cool sustainable cars on the market today!
As I look back on my first car experience I’m humbled by the fact that my parents bought me a car, that we had the money to fill the tank and I was handed instant freedom. I would have made it happen one way or another, but my point is that the vast majority of the people on this planet don’t have the freedom, education or funds. Gratitude first, then celebration.

How did you celebrate your freedom in your first car?
Everyone loved their first car. No matter how beat up or broken down, it was a taste of freedom and you loved it. Even thought it lasted only a brief time, that emotional connection is an experience that unites us all. Check out my custom illustrated story, you can submit one too at www.firstcarstory.com and bring your story to life with animation and music and share it with your friends.
